The mission and legal status of the Archives

The Archives of the Office of the President of the Czech Republic is a public archive whose activities are provided under Act No. 499/2004 Coll. on the Archives and Records Management, and the relevant implementing decrees. The English translation of the act and its implementing decrees is published on the website of the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic. Several additional laws also directly concern the issue of archiving (including the Act on Protection of Personal Data and the Copyright Act).

The President’s Office Archives is the traditional part of the system of archives in the Czech Republic. In the network of Czech archives the President’s Office Archives is classified as a specialized archive and is accredited by the Ministry of the Interior under Section 58 of the Act No. 499/2004 Coll. According to Sections 51-52 of this Act the Archives especially selects archival records from records created by the activities of the President and his Office, registers them, professionally organizes and arranges, permanently stores and makes these archival records available to the public. The Archives is staffed by professional, university educated archivists. Its repositories are equipped with stationary and mobile shelving units; the temperature and relative humidity of the repositories are maintained at suitable and constant levels. The President’s Office Archives along with the Archives of the Prague Castle, the Department of Records Management and the Department for Pre-Archival Care and Discarding of Records fall under the Department of Records Management and Archives Administration of the Office of the President of the Czech Republic.
